Sika-Design was established in 1942 by Ankjær Andreasen. Under the name "Jysk Siv og Halmkunst" (Jutish Reeds and Straw Art), Ankjær established a production of smaller wicker products which were made by home basket makers in Jutland.
In 1951 the company moves to the Danish island Funen, and the name is changed to “Sika”, a contraction of Siv (Reed), Kurve (Baskets) and Andreasen - and a reference to the light and elegant sika deer. The product range is now expanded with a production of furniture. Our oldest design, the Renoir hanging chair, was designed in 1956 and is still found in our product range.

Cleaning Steps:
1. Clean gently: Dust your rattan furniture regularly with a soft cloth. Never use paint thinners or abrasive creams to clean wicker or rattan cane furniture.
2. Dry wet rattan furniture well: A damp cloth with a mild furniture cleaner may be used, but take care not to soak the furniture. If it does become over saturated, dry outdoors in the sunlight, if possible. The natural plant material will generally return to its original shape, so take care not to bend it while wet.
3. Treat mildew immediately: If mildew or mold begins to form, use a strong bleach in soapy water to clean the affected areas. The furniture must then be immediately dried out of doors.
4. Rotate rattan furniture: Natural fibers can fade in strong sunlight. This is a natural process and not necessarily bad. However, if possible, rotate furniture throughout the space on a regular basis so as to evenly distribute the fading. You might also consider installing blinds or awnings to reduce extreme sun exposure.
5. Humidify: Keep furniture away from areas of extreme heat as this can warp or overly dry out the furniture. Natural plant fibers require a certain level of humidity so as not to dry out and split. If you’re in a particularly dry area, add moisture to the air with a humidifier.
6. Oil rattan furniture: If splitting has occurred due to excessive dryness, the best thing to do is to make sure no further damage occurs by treating the rattan or cane with tung or boiled linseed oil and raising the humidity level of the space.
7. Prevent sagging with pillows: Cane seats are very strong and yet flexible enough to provide a comfortable “sit,” but they can sag over time. Most cane seats are made to be used with a cushion that not only makes the seating more comfortable, but also serves to spread the sitter’s weigh more evenly across the surface.

Shipping Inspection and Damages
DO NOT SIGN FOR SHIPMENT UNTIL IT HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY INSPECTED FOR ANY DAMAGE. SHIPPER IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPMENTS THAT ARE NOT SIGNED FOR AS DAMAGED UPON ARRIVAL.
Please immediately inspect your furniture and share any concerns you may have with your delivery team. You have the right to refuse delivery if the item arrives damaged or if you fear the item might be damaged based on the packaging conditions. You must make any claims for damage, shortage or errors within 96 hours of delivery. If no claim is made within this 96-hour period, furniture will be considered fully accepted.
Sika Design USA reserves the right to inspect, repair or replace any merchandise at its discretion. Sika Design USA is unable to offer expedited production or shipping options on replacement orders.
On any LTL shipment, failure to note any damages on the Delivery Receipt before the trucker leaves will result in the denial of a claim. Exceptions will not be made for drop-shipments.
To ensure that any instance of shipping damage is addressed, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- At the time of delivery, all boxes should be inspected for suspected damage. If a box shows any damage, the box should be opened for further inspection before the trucker leaves the premises. Damages to any items or boxes delivered MUST be noted on the delivery receipt or bill of lading when you sign to accept the order. Failure to do so often results in refusal of a claim.
- If severe damage to the product is visible upon delivery, please reject the item from the carrier. This will expedite the claim process.
- Photos of the damaged pallet, damaged box(es), and damaged product should be taken to carefully document the claim. The more information provided, the more likely your claim will be accepted.
- Please retain all packaging materials of damaged items for a minimum of 120 days; this is required, should the carrier elect to inspect or retrieve the merchandise.
- When concealed damage occurs, shippers normally pay about 10% of the products’ value & must receive photos and proof of damage within 3 business days of delivery to accept a claim.
Sika Design USA is not responsible for shipping delays due to the fault of the factory, freight carrier or delivery carrier. Delivery and/or shipment dates provided in connection with any order are estimates only and do not represent fixed or guaranteed delivery dates.
